Good evening! I am Aishwarya Gairola speaking for the motion on the topic “is competition a necessary part of education “
Jacob kindleberger once said
“A little competition is a good thing and severe competition is a blessing.”
Education has a purpose to create excellent and responsible citizens. But it spends way too much time trying to change an individual , rather than to encourage them. Whereas Competition encourages and motivates them to be better.
Competition in education is simply preparation for life. There’s no job you ever got where you didn’t beat someone else out. There’s no job you ever DIDN’T get where someone else didn’t beat you to it.
Life is a series of competitive events. Humans are and have always been a competitive species.
Competition is the most ruthless and honest criticism of any skill or effort.
In the words of one of my favourite book characters:
“Only your enemy will show you where you are weak.”
Competition is not nice. Competition is not gentle. Competition is not friendly. Competition is honest and competition is life - and thus, is entirely necessary. Far better we teach this to children when the stakes are so trivial as a game. Classroom is the best place to seed a competitive individual.
Students aim to clear prestigious competitions like NEET, JEE, CLAT, UPSC and many more and for that they enroll themselves at coaching centres. Such draconian atmosphere is often created around these aspirants that it ends up burdening their daily lives and leads to mental health issues. The city of Kota is the shrine of aspirants. Away from their friends and families, these secluded aspirants in Kota face overwhelming pressure to clear these competitions and when they cannot then it takes a toll on their mental health. Thus Kota in particular apart from being the shrine of students is also the epicenter of teenage suicides.
Human, especially a child is very competitive by it's nature, and they require a constant mode to channelize this nature. and what can be a better way for this than educational instititution providing a platform to do so.
Competition is very essential for the growth of an individual. It is at the very core of our soceity and Educational institution aims to prepare one for the society through education. Therefore it is essential for them to prepare students in a holistic manner.
competition provides with an opportunity to learn better, and to think beyond, out of the box. It helps to assess better, improves the cognitive functioning, enhances creativity , teach stress management, helps one to cope up with failures, to overcome them. Basically competiton adds to the life skills.
A spirit of competition teaches children the importance of taking a healthy risk instead of only doing activities that they are comfortable with. It teaches kids to step out of their comfort zone and they often being averse of new risky activities can keep them from enjoying activities that they may grow to love. Taking risks such as participating in a new race or enrolling yourself for new activities also helps build the self-confidence of children. This confidence will go a long way in helping them as adults navigating a fiercely competitive adult world.?
Before we go any further, let us first ponder upon the benefits or the perks that a healthy competition provides -
I feel competition plays a very prominent role in education system because according to the Darwinian theory of evolution ‘survival of the fittest’ only those survive who compete with its contemporaries to live. This healthy competition supports evolution and growth. Same applies to the system of education where healthy competition promotes growth. When we strive to do better each day and to do better than our peers, we are a part of competition. Being in the competition helps us recognize our true potential. If people are better than us then they show us a mirror and we tend to improvise ourselves.
