I feel competition plays a very prominent role in education system because according to the Darwinian theory of evolution ‘survival of the fittest’ only those survive who compete with its contemporaries to live. This healthy competition supports evolution and growth. Same applies to the system of education where healthy competition promotes growth. When we strive to do better each day and to do better than our peers, we are a part of competition. Being in the competition helps us recognize our true potential. If people are better than us then they show us a mirror and we tend to improvise ourselves.

It is rather very twisted application of the Darwin's theory, the system of education was/is not meant to be something of a filter to choose and discard people according to their inherent skills (which in itself is a topic of discussion). Education is supposed to inculcate into students the values to question and find their own answers from it. It is not about showing mirror to anyone, there might be people who like and have a drive to push the boundaries of the learned sciences, but that doesn't mean we will demean the whole process. It is about the pleasure, the ideas, the philosphies that we gain from learning to question that is important. Competition on the other hand forces a timeline chocking the whole process, and building humans who are not concious beings but pre-programmed machines to act accordingly

Yes, i totally agree with you. Competition is something which needs to be directed in the right way. The right kind of competition will motivate the students into doing the best that they can by pushing each other to higher levels.

This survival yheory can be very lethal. Each child upholds different sets of possibilities.Going by this survival theory what woukd happen to those who donot top the class or are left behind academically due to physical and emotional reasons. This is nothing but a practice of sowing seeds of rivalry.
