Customized learning paths based on interests
the concept of examinations has been a manner to simply clog the brain with facts that a student might not even be interested in. and even now we don't have an answer or alternative to problems like rote learning, gaining marks by memorising things, a standstill to the development of the young minds. however, we definitely have an answer to the problems of increased pressure, better opportunities as well as development. and that is the abolishment of exams from the curriculum and the introduction of continuous assessment throughout the year based on the interests as well as the activities of the students.
Another noteworthy point here is that even though the new educational policy includes a lot of activities, the practice of taking exams is age-old, and was created in different circumstances. considering the plethora of career options available today, exams at school level primarily test the students on five subjects namely English, Hindi, Math, Science, and Social Sceinces. this further leads to confusion while opting for something that might be completely new, example law, designing etc. the concept of exams has established a concrete foundation of testing students only on these subjects, and many important skills, (that might be a career option) get sidelined!
In a book called "Peak- The Science of extraordinary achievements," the author Anders Erricson gives a comprehensive overview of why some people are simply better than 'normal' people! from surgens to musicians one thing that is common is 'deliberate practice' which means essentially focussing on skills. This phenomenon comes from outdoor activities, and the concept of exams simply ruins it, because students start focusing more on learning concepts rather than implementing them. Students cram formulas in math and science. But mugging up the formulae of area of triangle won't make a better future, for the representation and topology of the triange remain the same! what will change the future is the guidance towards helping the students to learn the skills to derive new equations. the example may vary with different interest of students, but the focus here is on skill development. it is quite understandable that not everybody can ace at a particular subject, and that is exactly why vocational activities based on one's interest should be encouraged, rather than making all students take exams based on same subjects!
The concept of examinations is present in the school curriculums with the motive to test whether the students have understood and grasped the concepts taught in class, and currently, they fail to do so. The reasons are multiple, as taking exams has become more about gaining marks, than understanding, hence focusing more on rote learning rather than clarity. Students having better memory tend to score better, irrespective of the fact whether they understand the concept they are writing in the exam or not.
We would agree that in this technology driven world we need to curate minds which we well informed which makes the concept of exams quite redundant
