There is definitely more to being an active citizen than elections and voting though these too are very important. Teaching our children to be engaged in issues and with people in their school and community and giving them the support to address issues and problems they face is a great way to teach democracy

here are some simple ways to teach children how to become active citizens: 1. Have them do a simple audit of their school - where does the school get water from? How does the school manage waste? How many trees / plants are there in school? Lights, fans etc? 2. Government school children can do an audit of their entitlements under RTE children can then present what they like about school, what they need and can request for to their HMs and if needed to their local leaders / panchayat
