A student who is regularly absent from school may feel 'behind' academically. They can also begin to lose touch with any friendships they have formed within school, or feel the need to push those friends away. These issues can result in low self-esteem, low self-confidence and - in extreme cases - school phobia. If a child is late, start with a positive interaction. It's important to remind them of school rules, but avoid making this the first thing you say to them. Imagine if your headteacher pointed out your mistakes as you walked into the building. It would probably lower your mood and self-confidence. This is exactly how your students feel too! So, greet them in a positive way first and then speak to them one-on-one about their lateness or attendance. Take an interest in every child in your class. For any child experiencing difficulties regarding attendance in school, think about ways to encourage their engagement with school and their learning. Be flexible in your approach. Children returning to school after persistent absenteeism are often exhausted by the school day and have high levels of anxiety about returning. Adopt a part-time timetable initially to give them an appropriate phased return. Make sure that your classroom is supportive and caring. Treat your students how you would like to be treated by your peers and senior members of staff. Use restorative justice techniques to handle any fallings out or bullying situations and ensure your PSHE and Citizenship lessons are delivered and address these areas. Speak to parents, carers and children regularly about the importance of attending school. Ensure that they are informed about the impact on attainment, life chances, self-esteem and self-confidence.
