The Mona Lisa was not always an icon. Though it was painted in 1507, it was not recognized as a grand example of Renaissance artwork until the 1860s. Even after this designation, the Mona Lisa was relatively unknown and unappreciated until a scandal broke in 1911. Vincenzo Perugia, a young Italian handymen who had worked at the Louvre, hid away overnight in a storeroom of the museum and woke early. He put on a generic white smock, entered the gallery in which the Mona Lisa was exhibited, and ripped the painting out of its frame and glass shadow box. He slipped the painting under his jacket, and quietly exited the Louvre through a side entrance. The theft went unnoticed for 26 hours. At the time, the Louvre was the largest building in the world and employed only 150 guards to watch over 1,000 rooms containing 250,000 art objects. This meant that thefts and defilements were a regular occurance. Perugia had hoped to sell the as yet uncelebrated painting on the black market, but the heist had inspired a media frenzy. Popular culture jumped on the story and the image, and a whirlwind of satire, image reproduction, postcards and vaudeville followed. The portrait was quickly turned into an iconic image known to all. Thousands of people came to the Louvre just to stare at the empty wall where the Mona Lisa had hung. 28 months later, thinking the hype had died down, the leader of these three robbers tried to sell the painting to an art dealer in Florence, and was immediately arrested. After sold-out exhibitions in Florence, Milan and Rome, the Mona Lisa was returned to the Louvre. On the first two days of its restoration, over 100,000 people came to see it. Today, over 8 million people a year crowd around this small portrait, and wonder why it is so famous… Over the last century, the painting has become absolutely iconic and referenced profusely in popular culture, building its fame building with each new adaptation.

If i see it from a maths perspective then we can relate it with the concept of Golden Ratio. An object or thing looks attractive and pleasing to eyes when their is a perfect balance between all the parts of the object. Many buildings and artworks have golden ratio in them and this painting is one of the example of that.
