ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) sent a probe to the Lunar South Pole and India was the first country to send a mission to this area of the moon. Before coming to the reasons for landing on lunar south pole it is important to understand why is moon being explored as a destination after so many years again. The primary reason is because moon is being considered as a forward base for deep space missions to Mars and other planets. One of the key essentials for building a forward base on moon is to have basic essentials like Water. Recently it was discovered that there may be possibility of frozen ice below the surface of moon in areas which do not receive sunlight. Lunar South Pole happens to be one such area which receives minimum sunlight. Thus, ISRO decided to send a probe to this area to further investigate the presence of water. If ISRO had landed the rover on moon's surface and it was able to detect frozen water and confirm the early indicators, India's contribution to future deep space missions of the world would have been recorded in golden letters. However, ISRO has achieved many more great things and will continue to do so in the coming years.
