"Marks don't matter." Doesn’t this phrase make students put their efforts on studies lesser? They proudly say this nowadays. What are your thoughts on this ?

Most of the times marks only measure your memorizing ability that's why I agree that we should not be obsessed with the marks our children are getting. The focus should be on acquiring knowledge and a set of skills which helps you to apply the gained knowledge in your real-life. Marks should not be the sole criteria to judge the intelligence of an individual. But it is true that some of our students these days take this statement as an excuse and avoid putting efforts into studies. We need to find some ways to make them realise the importance of education.

Marks should indeed not matter. We are living in a dynamic world being driven by technology. There can be multiple ways of testing a child and marks should not be one of them because marks makes us judge the child on a scale and human capabilities should not be judged on scales. As a society we need to broaden our horizons and think beyond marks. Children may come up with this explanation that marks don’t matter or that education as a whole does not matter. There are examples like Bill Gates, Sachin Tendulkar, Mark Zukerberg etc. who did not complete their education. However, each one of them had a plan which they turned into a vision. If a child comes to me and says, “marks don’t matter, hence I wont study”. I will say, “well yes, marks don’t matter but success in life does. Show me a plan to succeed and I won’t tell you to study”.

Marks should never be the only criteria to judge a person's ability. Each individual is unique possessing certain qualitative differences.
