तत्कालीन भारतीय समाज में महिलाओं से सम्बंधित अनेक सामाजिक कुरीतियाँ विद्यमान थीं, जैसे – बाल-विवाह, शिशु-हत्या, सती-प्रथा, विधवाओं की दयनीय दशा तथा निम्न-स्तरीय नारी शिक्षा आदि. आरम्भ में ब्रिटिश सरकार ने इनमें से कुछ बुराइयों को समाप्त करने के लिए कुछ कदम उठाये.
