Local effects following inhalation of chloroform include shortness of breath and irritation of the nose and throat. Acute inhalation can cause systemic effects such as excitement, nausea, and vomiting followed by ataxia, dizziness, drowsiness.

Yes, chloroform is a potent anaesthetic agent. Bit it can also cause some side effects . It can cause progressive CNS depression. Initial symptoms include nausea , vomiting etc. In severe cases, paralysis of medullary respiratory centre may lead to respiratory failure and sudden death.
