What alternative teaching methods have you found most successful when assisting special needs students?

Using play-way method, using aids that are easily available is the most effective way to teach children. As against by rote/ by heart learning.

Example: Teaching addition to children on steps with the related numbers written on the steps is the best way to teach concepts of addition.

No beads, no cardws, nothing, the child, her environment and her teacher. Best teaching aids ever.
