Dear Arpita,

When we learn to speak, we start with the basic sounds, commonly known as phonics. As we grow up, we develop the skill of connecting the phonics to create words and move ahead to make meaningful sentences.

When we say foundational literacy, it refers to the knowledge and application of the basic phonics, wotds and meaningful sentence structures that make up the language. Without this foundational literacy, the mastry over any language can't be acquired, which makes it more challenging for the students as they move in higher grades because the level of vocabulary and  language usuage also increases.
