Jhum cultivation also called slash and burn agriculture is a form of crop-growing farming activity. Crops are grown in this cultivation by clearing the trees and other vegetation and then burning the fields. Land burning allows the addition of potash to the soil, which in effect increases soil fertility and nutrient content. In the North-East states, agriculture is primarily based on Jhum cultivation.
