I believe by silence here you mean that the students should actually pay attention to what you are trying to convey, for that one thing that can done is to make the class more interactive, so that the students also feel connected towards the subject and it will also help you to develop a reputation with the class, being a student myself I can say that when the class is interactive it automatically becomes more interesting.

The motive behind a classroom is to not make students sit silent, because even if they are silent, this doesn't indicates their focus and attention is on what you are teaching, rather try making the class more interactive, where an equal system of give and take arises, if you are giving them something you take something too, if you are teaching them a topic, you need questions, opinions, their thoughts and Ideas about it, it would keep their minds busy, and would make them discover their own self and even the subject and their capabilites and interests.

And that urge of silencing their own curiousity in their mind, would make the sit quietly and patiently in order to look for an answer to their question.
