It varies for each student. While one can find studies approving the signifance of visual images, there are approaches like music or word making. In any case the teacher should confirm whether relate  the cues provided in these techniques with the real. For example, a word like 'O,S,Se, Te, Po, Lv' can be used to remenber elements in oxygen groups in the periodic table, but it's also important that the students do not forget that O is Oxygen, S is Sulphur etc.
