Mahmud of Ghazni destroyed the temple in 1026 AD, then Afzal Khan who was the commander of Alauddin Khilji and later Aurangzeb. The temple was destroyed as many as seventeen times. Destroyed and reconstructed several times in the past. The Somnath temple located in the western coast of Gujarat. It is an important pilgrimage and tourist spot of Gujarat.

साल 1026 में महमूद गजनवी ने सोमनाथ मंदिर को नष्ट कर दिया था. कहा जाता है कि अरब यात्री अल-बरुनी के अपने यात्रा वृतान्त में मंदिर का उल्लेख देख गजनवी ने करीब 5 हजार साथियों के साथ इस मंदिर पर हमला कर दिया था. इस हमले में गजनवी ने मंदिर की संपत्ति लूटी और हमले में हजारों लोग भी मारे गए थे
