Bordering Tibet, it is noted for its Himalayan landscapes (Himachal Pradesh means 'snow-laden region') and is a popular tourist destination for trekking and enjoying the natural beauty. It also has the fourth highest per capita income for Indian States and is the third fastest growing economy in India. Following independence from Britain in 1947, Himachal Pradesh was created as a province on April 15th 1948. This event is celebrated with a public holiday of its own - Himachal Day.
