In general, the number of electrons in last shell in electronic configuration determines the valency of an atom. In simple, Valency is the number of electron a atom receive or donate to become stable during chemical reaction. Valency according to number of electrons in last shell ( valence shell) is as follows:- Valency 1 is for atom having 1 or 7 electron in their last shell. Valency 2 is for atom having 2 or 6 electron in their last shell. Valency 3 is for atom having 3 or 5 electron in their last shell. Valency 4 is for atom having 4 electron in their last shell.
Valency is defined as the electrons present in outer most shell of electropositive elements whereas in case of electronegative elements valency is no. Of electrons they need to fill their last shell.
