Electricity requires path of least resistance and moisture inside a tree is much better conductor than air.A tree provide a preferred path for lightning to reach to ground

Lightning attracts towards tall and pointed objects. So, trees behave like pointed objects when on the open ground and lightning strikes them.

Because the conduction of water from down ward to upward and absorb by leaves.Leaves having stomatal pores , which releases water in outer surface of leaf.The clouds having +,- charges due to deposition of water fall down and attracted towards the droplets of leaf surface.Junction point of each charges creat a sparkling effects. That is called thunder
