Step 1 – Letter Sounds. Most phonics programmes start by teaching children to see a letter and then say the sound it represents. Step 2 – Blending. Children are taught how to blend individual sounds together to say a whole word. Step 3 – Digraphs. Step 4 – Alternative graphemes. Step 5 – Fluency and Accuracy.
The children are already aware of the basic phonic sounds of the alphabets which they have learnt in class Kg . In Class I , they learn about sound blends or diagraphs...when two or more alphabets are joined to produce a sound like ee, oo, ch, th, ck, wh etc. To begin with a particular sound, its important to show the pictures or real objects with that sound so that the child becomes familiar with the sound . Then reading of the words can be done . Many activities/ task / games related to the sound can be done. Children can be shown ppt or videos of the images of that sound.
